Retinal Exams

We have state-of-the-art equipment that enables us to perform retinal exams. Retinal exams enable us to view the back of your eye through an ophthalmoscope. Regular retinal examinations are helpful in catching problems before vision is damaged. We dilate the pupil prior to the exam, so we can have a wider view inside the eye.

We use eye drops to dilate the pupil, and following the exam your eyes may sense temporary blurriness and sensitivity to light. It is important that you provide detailed information regarding your medical history to our staff before the examination. We need a list of your medications, any allergies, medical conditions or recent illnesses.

The retinal exam is done in conjunction with a routine eye exam, but can uncover things that aren’t visible during the regular exam. Having a regular exam plus a retinal exam is important to ensure the overall health of your eye. Your vision is your most important sense, so you need to protect it to the best of your abilities.

We will photograph your eye during the retinal exam and keep the image on file to compare it with any new images so we can see if there have been changes throughout the years. By being able to compare the images, we can also catch vision problems or eye diseases early.
